A Play Written in Response to the #MeToo Movement

Directors Note

A few words from Cami Rozanas, the director of Amanda's play Monologues from a Movement.

This play was written as a response to, and in the context of, the MeToo movement. As such, it incorporates real stories gathered from women that Amanda interviewed as part of her process of developing the play.

What emerges is a critique of a historically misogynistic culture that has led to generational, systematic, inequalities. These personal stories touch on several varied aspects of the MeToo movement, including personal relationships, social encounters between strangers, overall societal attitudes, local Utah religious culture, and the workplace.

A few of these stories will entertain you and even make you laugh. Some will sound all too familiar. Some will be hard to hear. There’s no other way to say it. I wish I could say these kinds of stories are rare. But, if you know a woman, you know somebody with a heartbreaking MeToo moment she could tell you about if she wanted to.

Chances are, she has more than one. As I’ve been working with the women in the cast, I have been disheartened to learn how many of these stories they find relatable to moments in their own lives. But I have also been inspired by their strength, resilience, and willingness to be vulnerable in this project.

Ultimately, we are here to tell and honor the stories of women. And to act as their voices for the space of this play.
